ARGENTINE PATAGONIA
Our Sept. speaker will be Eric Kramer ,TIC coordinator from Sespe Flyfishers.
Eric has been a member of Sespe Fly Fishers ever since he and his wife Ellen moved to Oxnard from Huntington Beach 14 years ago.
Eric will present a slide show about fishing Lago Strobel, better known as Jurassic Lake, located in Patagonia, Southern Argentina and home to the largest Rainbow Trout in the world —- as well as Las Pampas Lodge, home to the largest Brook Trout in the world.
Lago Strobel / Barrancoso River
Lago Strobel is a natural stillwater with a 15-mile shoreline, ocean-sized swells and until relatively recently, free of any trout.
In the mid 90's the Barrancoso River was stocked with eggs from spawning steelhead (which were transplants from the US) as well as trout eggs (also from the US) in order to create a source of income for the local ranchers as a commercial fishery.
The feasibility of this seemed nearly impossible and the idea was lost. However, over the next few years the rainbows began to grow into enormous sizes due to the rich food sources found in the lake. The main source of food is scuds for these rainbows, as well as daphnia - a small zooplankton.
HUGE TROUT - A REALITY!
Once the huge trout became known, sport fishing became a reality. Now roads have been carved into the rough landscape to allow fishing the many different bays and parts of the river and lake.
It is a one-of-a-kind destination where the average sized rainbow weighs in at a solid seven pounds, and fish exceeding twenty pounds are landed each season.
