I went to the Eastern Sierra near Bishop to fish with an old friend from Michigan hoping to spend quality time together and catch a few fish. The rivers were mostly high and unwadeable, but Hot Creek was not so bad. Not much happening as far as hatches, but we caught a few fish in spite of very windy conditions. Lower Owens was running over 600 cfs and came down to about 400 cfs on our last fishing day. Most fish were caught on caddis dries or midge patterns. I got to fish with a 6'4" bamboo rod that I had just refinished and was very surprised at how well it cast flies on 2wt line. It could have performed better on 4 wt line,in my opinion, but still a unique experience. If you plan to fish this area, be sure to check current flows on rivers and creeks to make the most of your trip.
